Edinburgh Blogmeet 8th November - the plans

by GilraenH @ Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008 - 17:15:22

Hi there

Well, the Edinburgh blogmeet is coming up on Saturday 8th November.

I will be picking up RDW from the airport at 3.35pm (although I may park in town and get the airport bus in and out). Then RDW and I will be checking into the Sheraton on Festival Square and having a quick gin pick-me-up gentle relax before we head out to the Grassmarket (which has wonderful castle views). I figure we will get there about 6 or 7ish and I will try and get a seat in the Beehive Inn to the west end of the Grassmarket. This pub does get a bit busy later on but at that time of the evening it should be relatively quiet and we may be able to get something to eat, it has the usual pub fayre. People can take care of themselves if you fancy a bite to eat. I'm not planning to book a restaurant or somesuch as I think that will be too complicated, probably best if we all tuck into some pub grub before the pubs get busy. If I say we will be at the Beehive until at least 7pm (and stay longer if its not too hectic) then that is a good meeting place. If anyone wants to know my mobile number then please send me a message with your e-mail and I'll pass it along.

As for the following day (Sunday 9th) RDW doesn't have to be at the airport until the evening, so we have a bit of time to kill and for those folks that are still there can find a nice place to have lunch and have a shufty round the castle if you want or just take in the city. I can stay as long as people want as I only live 25 miles away and will have my car.

Edinburgh Waverely Station is virtually in the city centre so anyone should be able to walk there from the centre of town. The airport is a little further out of town, but there's a bus service that takes you to the city centre and if anyone wants a lift to the airport on Sunday evening, then I will be taking RDW there anyway (probably be leaving about 6pm for that).

So who's coming? And does anyone need to know any more details?

Here's some pics to get you in the mood:

I also quite like the look of Usky's Medieval Blogmeet though too!

If I can sort myself out as far as accommodation is concerned I'll be there.

As I've said before, I've never been to Edinburgh, so it should be a nice little adventure for me. I'm quite looking forward to it. :)

Hope you can make it NBob! A new face to a name is always good. :)

I've just booked myself a room at the Northfield House Hotel. Looks good, and at a very reasonable rate.

Edinburgh, here I come! :D

Now I just need to get myself there!

Cool! Where will you be coming from?

I'll be coming up from Woking, arriving at Edinburgh Waverley at 14:39. Then it's just a matter of getting to the hotel and booking in.

If you're coming from Woking, then is it best to fly up from Heathrow? RDW is doing that - if you are both on the same plane, then I can meet you both at the airport (her flight gets in at 3.35pm) - she's going on Sunday evening too. Can liaise with her if you want to do that, although the express bus from the airport takes you right in the centre of town, see Nic's comment above) - that's the one I'll be catching when I come to pick up RDW but I'll be driving back to the airport on Sunday. If training it, Waverley Station is also in the centre of town.

I'm coming up by train arriving at 14:39 (hopefully!) then staying overnight and leaving at 15:00 on the Sunday.

I'm really looking forward to spending 14 hours on trains that weekend

Oh dear! Take a book! Or a charged up MP3 vid player and a couple of movies...

Well, I won't make the Saturday, I'm afraid.

I thought it would be earlier - lunchtime-ish. I am at a 50th birthday party from about 7pm. I won't have time to meet up and also get the kids and myself ready for the party at night time.

Again, unfortunately, I won't make the Sunday, either, as I will have to drive back up here, to get the kids back at a reasonable time for school on Monday.

I'm gutted. I've been looking forward to this blogmeet for ages :(

That IS frustrating, I'm so sorry you've got a clash.

I can always make a day of it - I have to leave to pick RDW at the airport but can see you before then if you fancy coming down to Edinburgh ealier.

Is Kelly landing at 3.35? I wonder if I could just meet you both for a coffee at the airport? Would that work? Coz the airport is only about 1 hour from where I will be.

Well, we currently have a slight technical hitch in that my parents can't babysit for us during the day but I'm hoping that my sister can

If we do make it then we'll probably stay at the Apex city inn, which is opposite the Beehive Inn & up a bit so that would be a perfect place for us to meet you.

Thanks for the offer of picking us up from the airport/station but that won't be necessary as we'll be driving up.

Hopefully we'll see you all on the 8th :>>

Ah, the Apex. Hubs and I stayed there a few weeks ago, but Kelly and I found that they had a problem with only staying one night (they wouldn't take the booking unless it was for the Sat and Sun night). If you manage to get around that, brill - it's an absolutely amazing location. Parking's a bitch though.

I do hope you can make it. If it's only for a night, I know for a fact how far it is for you to come, but it'll be a great night.

I'm making it!! We're staying at the Novotel on Lauriston place instead though. Its near the Grassmarket & castle so we should be able to find our way to the Beehive in ok...

See you on the 8th :>>

Those pictures look suspiciously sunny and dry.

I think you are creating a false impression of Edinburgh at that time of year.

And if you get the bus from the airport people - get the express!

It costs more but the other alternative is spending bloody ages on the normal bus, going slowly mental as you stop at EVERY BLOODY BUS STOP!

;)

The Express it is - cheers Nic.

They don't believe in trains to airports in Scotland. The concept baffles them.

Trams, however....

Darn. I specifically stepped into my time machine and back again.

I'm suing Torchwood, I tell you.

It will just be the Saturday evening/night for us I think as we are leaving earlyish on Sunday. We will try to meet up with you in the Beehive around 7pm. We might go for the Streetfood option lateron rather than a formal pub meal as we tend to eat a bit later than that and Edinburgh is a great place to get a variety of interesting snacks.

"Deep Fried Crunchie with pakora, chips and chili sauce for me please."

;)
